RE: ‘Politics, not class war are what’s needed’, (SA, Feb 27, Charles Linfield).

Two points: (If I may).

“Eton today (states Charles Linfield) offers a world class education to boys of all backgrounds.”

Trip!

Eton claims that 20 per cent of its intake already receives some form of bursary. But this doesn’t mean that 20 per cent of its present intake can realistically be classed as ‘poor’. Eton bursaries cover a maximum of half of its fees, meaning that parents of its recipients still have to pay a massive £13,000 a year!

When Eton brags about having widened its net across all social classes, it does not include the poor, but rather, the less than the stratospherically wealthy middle-classes.

In short, spin.

“Sons of old Etonians,” he continues, “on the other hand, are no longer guaranteed entry.”

More tripe!

What Eton does is to academically examine one’s bank balance and status.

As long as the class-system exists (at the heart of which lies the monarchy) so will injustices. The rich believe that they have a god-given right to lord it over us. Enter David Cameron. It’s the ruling classes themselves who have declared war on the have-nots. The gap between rich and poor is at its widest in living history. Can you name a miner’s son or the son of a building labourer who attends Eton? Democracy and extreme economic inequality form, when combined, an unstable compound.

As you can see, Charles Linfield, the class system is far from dead. The dead are those uncritical souls who fall victim to the clap-trap vomited by such obnoxious institutions.
