THE prosecution of Miss Kate Harding for not reporting her find of a rare French coin under the Treasure Act 1996 is a miscarriage of justice.

There is no obligation on a finder of a single coin to report it to the coroner or finds officer for the area. Although helpful to archaeologists and others single coins of gold or silver are not classed as treasure according to the Act.

So if you are fortunate to find a Roman silver coin while digging the garden report it if you are so inclined, but don’t worry if you do not.

As for Miss Harding, she should start proceedings to obtain the return of her property.
