IN late July 1945 with British troops scattered all over what was then the Empire, actively engaged in a major shooting war in the Far East and still clearing up after another in Europe, Britain held a General Election. The results from our forces in Burma and elsewhere in that part of the world took weeks to be returned to Britain and counted but almost everyone got a vote.

Today with electronic mail taking seconds to travel the same distance I was somewhat surprised to see Mr Wills is saying that there would be possible problems in giving votes to servicemen in the Afghanistan/Iraq theatres.

How far modern methods have come - all of it seemingly in the wrong direction.
