I WONDER how many residents of Swindon and wider Wiltshire were as shocked as I was to learn that according to the BBC 80 per cent of the ticket allocation for the 2012 Olympics would go to the corporate sector, athletes and their families, Government and other local authorities with just 20 per cent going to the general public.
What was even more shocking was that this 20 per cent must be made equally available to all EU member states under European Union Directives. So nine million tickets will be made available to 450 million people while Britain pays the lion’s share of the expected 15 billion cost. Pity we weren’t told that when we bid for the games.
