IT is with interest I read the article about parking fines on the front of today’s Advertiser (May 9). Having no connection whatsoever with the council or the wardens, I must say I think they and the council do a great job and note the comments by Ms Doyle who feels “People usually cannot afford to pay these fines” a bit of a joke. There is a simple solution Ms Doyle, don’t park where you shouldn’t, when you shouldn’t.

Mr Oliveri who thinks the “penalty is quite expensive”, simple solution, walk, Newhall Street isn’t that far from your address in Medgbury Road. Ms Highmore who clearly states “car parks are quite cheap in the town centre”, quite right Ms Highmore, so why those people who choose to flaunt the law and parking regulations around the town centre don’t actually bother to use them, is beyond belief.

People who choose to totally ignore parking regulations deserve everything they get. They should think themselves lucky Swindon is not like some other councils, where they might not just get a ticket, but towed away for flaunting regulations. It wouldn’t be just the penalty charges they would be facing, but the towing fees and storage charges. Perhaps that might teach those who feel it their right to park on double yellow lines or just wherever you like a lesson.

It is a shame the number of wardens has sadly dropped as the council might be able to patrol areas such as Commercial Road and College Street where ignorami think the double yellow lines on the road and double yellow lines on the kerb indicates a free parking place for them while they go to the bank, do some shopping or have an eye test. The council could also be even more pro-active in patrolling time limited parking areas (ie limited two hours, not return within one hour etc).

I’m fully behind the council and the wardens who do a great and valued job. Only those who choose to flaunt the law and parking regulations have anything to fear from them. Park responsibly and legally. Use a car park and display a parking ticket then you won’t find them putting a ticket on you.
