A POLISH man died after suffering catastrophic brain injuries from being punched during a night out with friends, a court heard.

Grzegorz Beyer suffered the fatal blow on May 2 last year in the town centre just hours after he had been celebrating his daughter’s first Holy Communion with family and friends.

He died on May 4 in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a result of his injuries.

Marcin Koscielniak is currently on trial at Bristol Crown Court for his manslaughter, which he denies.

Marcin’s brother Zbigniew Koscielniak is also on trial in the proceedings where he faces an ABH assault on a third party.

Both were assisted by translators.

The jury of six men and six women heard from Crown Prosecutor Kerry Maylin that it was in the early hours that the attack happened near to the water fountain at the crossroads of Bridge Street, Canal Walk, The Parade and Regent Street.

She told the court how Marcin Koscielniak, along with his brother Zbigniew Koscielniak and three other people, had been drinking in the town centre since the early evening.

It was when the group were in the Boston Brothers bar that security staff received complaints about Marcin and attempted to remove him from the premises.

Ms Maylin said: “Mr Beyer and his brother-in-law Lucasz Adamczyk, along with his friend Lucasz Domalgala, had wanted to carry on the celebrations from the afternoon so they made their way through the centre of the town when they overheard bouncers throwing men out of a club.

“The three were then approached by Marcin and Zbigniew Koscielniak, and Lucasz Adamczyk and Lucasz Domalgala said they seemed like they wanted a fight. They were shouting and swearing.

“Zbigniew Koscielniak was saying he needed drink and cigarettes.

“Mr Domalgala responded and said ‘get to work’ and asked them to leave them alone.

“Zbigniew Koscielniak then ran at Mr Domalgala and hit him in the face.

"Mr Domalgala then hit back at both males and both ended up on the floor.”

The court heard how the groups dispersed, with Mr Beyer and his friends going on to a pub and the Koscielniak brothers staying in the town centre.

It was hours later that the two groups met again where Mr Beyer was hit, falling to the ground backwards, hitting his head on a concrete slab.

During the first day of proceedings, Grzegor’s brother in law Lucasz Adamczyk took to the witness stand to give his recollection of events and it is expected that the trial will last 10 days.

The trial continues.
