Timeline of events
March 19, 1.15am: Sian sends a text to Kevin asking “where are you?” March 19, 2.15am: Sian is separated from her friends in Suju. March 19, 2.52am: CCTV footage from the nightclub shows Sian leaving alone. March 19, 3.24am: Kevin sends a text message to Sian’s phone saying ‘I’m worried’. The signal registers at the mast in Cadley, indicating the mobile is somewhere in Savernake Forest. March 19, 9.45am: Kevin reports her disappearance to police after contacting family and friends through the night. March 19: Police launch an investigation, which includes searches of Savernake Forest and test runs of the route from Old Town to Marlborough. March 21, 11am: Teams of officers scour through woodland in Lawn, and search bins and drains in the area behind Suju. Police also setup a mobile incident room in Market Square car park, opposite the nightclub. March 21, 3pm: Sian’s family attend a press conference at Gablecross Police Station and issue an emotional plea to the public. March 22, 3pm: More than 300 public volunteers join police and other groups in a detailed search of Savernake Forest. An anonymous donor offers a £20,000 reward for any information that directly leads to Sian being found. March 23, 9am: Police call for volunteers to stay away from Savernake Forest as they narrow down the search area. March 23, 1.30pm: Divisional Commander for Swindon Steve Hedley thanks the public and the media for their help in the investigation. March 24, 12.45pm: Chief Superintendent Steve Hedley holds a press conference and announces a man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping Sian. He says more news is expected later in the afternoon. March 24, shortly after 1pm: Police begin searching a house in Ashbury Avenue, Swindon. March 24, 5pm: Police hold press conference and announce a 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and two murders and is being questioned by officers in Swindon. One of the bodies is believed to be that of Sian O'Callaghan. March 24, evening: People begin to leave floral tributes and light candles at the entrance of Suju nightclub in tribute to Sian. March 25, 11am: Police hold another press conference and say Sian's body has been recovered from near Uffington and is undergoing a post-mortem examination. The second body, near Northleach in Gloucestershire, is yet to be identified. Det Insp Fulcher says they believe it has been there "some years" and he confirms there is only one outstanding missing person in Wiltshire. March 26, morning: The 47-year-old man arrested on suspicion of kidnap and two murders appears before Swindon magistrates, who grant police an extension until 3.15am on Monday, March 28 to question him. The man remains in custody at Gablecross Police Station. March 26, 1pm: Police announce Sian's family have given permission for them to remove the floral tributes from Suju so the club can open in the evening. |
