With two people fined under the covid regulations on Friday after police caught them at a beauty spot car park, we look at some of the recent examples of those rapped for flouting the new rules.

Earlier this week, Wiltshire Police announced officers had issued almost 60 fines over the preceding seven days.

And on Thursday, Chief Constable Kier Pritchard promised action would be taken against those flagrantly breaking the government’s coronavirus regulations.

He said in a YouTube video: “We are ready, when we need to, to police with consent but do that in a fair, robust and consistent way and when those circumstances require us to continue to move into the enforcement activity that’s what we’ll do.”

‘You are the problem’

An audibly shocked police constable asked the organiser of a birthday barbecue whether or not he’d heard of coronavirus.

The party organiser was one of 23 people given £800 fines last Saturday when police found them in a house in Primrose Close, Haydon Wick.

One officer’s body-worn video camera captured his conversation with the homeowner who had organised the party.

“It's my birthday,” he could be heard telling the constable.

The officer replied: “It's your birthday? Oh, okay.

“Do you watch the news at all? So you know what's going on in the world? People like you are the problem, do you understand that?”

Yes, he said. The officer added: “You do get that? You understand about coronavirus and the pandemic and lockdown regulations?”

Chief Constable Kier Pritchard said: "It is astounding to me that people still believe it is acceptable to travel across the country to attend a birthday party.

"I have been clear that our policing response must continue to be robust, fair and consistent and this enforcement action is exactly what I would expect my officers to be doing with such a flagrant breach.”

Pair caught in beauty spot car park

Two people from Swindon were each fined £200 after police caught them in a car park near Ashton Keynes.

Officers said the pair were in a vehicle in Clayhill car park on Friday night.

Writing on Facebook, police said: “Officers spoke with the occupants of the vehicle and quickly ascertained that they had made an unnecessary journey and were not there for a legitimate or legal purpose.”

Police have not said what "illegal purpose" took the pair to the remote car park.

Child among those found at Wiltshire barbecue

Senior officer Supt Dave Minty said there was “no excuse” after his officers broke up a house party in Shears Drive, Amesbury, on February 1.

Nine adults, aged between 20 and 44 and all from Amesbury or Salisbury, were each given £200 fines. Police said there was also a child at the barbecue.

Supt Minty said: "The people organising and attending these parties are showing a selfish disregard for the health and safety of the general public and we will not tolerate it."
