SWINDON Town's hunt for a 6-year-old boy who wrote a letter to the club saying he and his mum couldn't afford tickets to watch the team play has sparked a huge reaction on social media.

A tweet by the club showed a picture of a letter written by 'Joe', who also enclosed 26p for his favourite player, Harry McKirdy.

It has been shared hundreds of times on Twitter, with a JustGiving page set up to help 'Joe' and his mum out raising more than £1,000 to get them to the County Ground.

The letter read: "Mummy doesn't have any money to come to Swindon games because she has no money for food and has to pay for my dinner at schol [sic].

"I like Swindon Town Harry McKirdy. I will come one day. Joe, 6-and-a-half."

The club posted the letter on social media with the hopes of finding 'Joe' and his family and helping them.

It said in a tweet: "We have received this letter from Town fan Joe, aged 6 and a half.

"We'd really love to get in touch with Joe, but we don't have a return address.

"If anyone recognises the writing or thinks they know who Joe is, please email supporters@swindontownfc.co.uk."

The post then went viral after being retweeted more than 1,000 times with many members of the public sharing it to try and reach the young boy, and Sky and TalkSport sharing the story.

All of the money raiased via the JustGiving page will be passed to the club to donate to the family if they are identified.

Others, including supporters of rival clubs, have offered to pay for matchday tickets and supply week's worth of shopping.

Some have raised concerns that 'Joe' might not be real and the letter is a joke or wind-up that has got out of hand, but for now the public is rallying around the club to try and help what appears to be a family in need.
