Former Swindon Town striker Charlie Austin has announced that he will be ending his contract in Australia to return home back to the United Kingdom.

It had been widely speculated earlier this week that the striker would depart Brisbane Roar after just six months at the club.

The news was broken via a video distributed by the Australian club’s social media platforms on Wednesday morning.

“I’ve spoke to the football club and decided to part ways,” said Austin.

“It’s nothing to do with the football or anything like that, I’ve enjoyed my time.”

When asked about the cause for his swift departure from Oz, the player cited family reasons as the driving factor in the move.

“At this moment in my career and at my kid’s life and my marriage, I need to put my family first,” revealed Austin.

“I just feel for myself and for the family the best thing is to go back to the UK.”

Austin made just four appearances for the A-League side, netting a healthy return of two goals.

Since the news of the striker’s departure filtered through to the Town faithful, many Swindon fans have hoped that this could spell a return for their former player.

Scott Lindsey’s side are currently struggling in the scoring department, having failed to net a single goal in their last three matches.

This is a problem that may well be solved by the potential acquisition of Austin, who managed to muster up 37 goals in just 65 games during his time at the Wiltshire club.

Although his time in Brisbane was brief, several Roar fans were sad to see the Englishman leave the club.

“I was very disappointed to hear he was leaving Roar as he’s a character and was good PR wise for the club and league,” said Graham O'Brien, a fan of the A-League club.

“I haven’t seen him do much on the field as he missed a lot more chances than goals scored but he was a good influence on our many young players.”

Despite the untimely exit, Graham and other fans respect the legacy left in Australia by the former Premier League striker.

“He has been very popular at Roar with the fans and the players,” he revealed.

“He's been an asset to the A-League too and he will be missed.”

Austin will now be a free agent and available to sign for Swindon should the club wish to pursue the move and an agreement be made.
