SWINDON Town manager Michael Flynn reflected on “a good outing” as the Robins began their pre-season schedule with a 2-0 victory over Swindon Supermarine on Wednesday night.

Jake Cain and Tom Brewitt bagged the goals either side of the break – the centre-back’s contribution came days after he was officially confirmed as having agreed a new deal with the club.

All but three first-team professionals received minutes, with Ronan Darcy, Harrison Minturn, and Reece Devine sitting the first game of the summer out due to “little niggles”, according to Flynn.

While the League Two side were far from their slick best on a sticky pitch, and understandably so given the situation, the Town boss was mostly pleased with the initial showing from his men.

He said: “It was a good outing. The boys have worked extremely hard, so there was a lot of fatigue on the pitch, as you always get.

“It was a lovely pitch, but it was quite long and slow. But there were some pleasing things tonight. We’ve only been together for five days now, and I saw some pleasing things.

“There was once or twice where we took too many touches – you can’t do that. It’s all good saying the pitch is long; we know the pitch is long, so don’t take too many touches.

“But first game in, it was a little bit earlier than I would have liked, but I do understand the importance of supporting local clubs and having that relationship within the community, so I didn’t want to pull out.

“It was good, and we look to Saturday now – the players have got another tough couple of days, running-wise.”

REPORT: Town make winning start to pre-season schedule.

Of the three trialists who featured for the Robins on Wednesday night, goalkeeper Lewis Ward was the most recognisable to the four-figure crowd inside the Webbswood.

Ward has been training with Town since leaving former club Sutton United earlier this year, but Flynn confirmed there is no deal on the table just yet.

Asked what Ward’s current situation is, Flynn replied: "yep, he’s in with us and he’s trying to earn a contract.”

When probed over a potential deal for the two other trialists – one of which was former Forest Green Rovers centre-back, Jordan Moore-Taylor – the Town boss joked: “I don’t know who trialists A and C were!

“They’ll be with us for as long as we need to make a decision.”
